Pickle St

South Melbourne

This project transforms a narrow 5‑metre‑wide, dimly lit workers cottage into a light‑filled, highly efficient family home. The design accommodates three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a study, generous living spaces and a rear studio on a compact 198m² site, achieved through careful planning and a strong focus on natural light.

A gabled roof, vertical cladding and textured grey bricks bridge the area’s industrial–residential character, blending heritage references with contemporary expression. Skylights, courtyards and a dramatic waterfall skylight draw daylight deep into the interior, turning previously dim areas into bright, inviting spaces. Large sliding doors open the living area to the terrace and garden.

Above the garage, a laneway-facing studio provides a retreat for two teenage boys. Fluted glass doors and stacked sliders allow the garage to operate as a flexible secondary living zone, expanding the home’s usable footprint.
